Hi, welcome to the SEOkeywordExample optimisation page. This page demonstrates the placing of a keyword for optimised ranking in a search engine.
To get the search engines ranking your page correctly you need to build your page optimised for their "spiders" and indexing engines. There are a number of factors to consider and these include off-page links, on-page optimisation and a few important mistakes to avoid.
For Google, "off-page" factors are actually the most important ones to consider. Though Google will still list a well built page, the on-page factors are an essential consideration for other search engines.
On-page Factors
Looking initially at on-page design features, the 10 commandments of a good web page are:
1. The page's <title> tag should contain your SEOkeywordExample. Avoid duplications but phrased variations are acceptable. For example you can say "Salt, Salts and Salted Foods". Also make sure every page has a unique title, this is essential to good indexing and a common mistake to avoid.
2. The correct use of these Meta tags should be implemented:
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="SEOkeywordExample"> ,
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="A short description with SEOkeywordExample in the first five words."> and,
<META NAME="ROBOTS" content="ALL">
KEYWORDS should be less than 10 words and less than 150 characters and ensure ALL keywords are found in the body text.
DESCRIPTION should be less than 200 characters and is often used as the description displayed in search results. It should also contain your keywords.
3. Use the most important keywords in a <h1> field at the very top of the page then also in <H2> and <H3> tags.
4. Liberally sprinkle your keywords through the page at a ratio of once every one or two paragraphs. (each keyword 1-6%, all keywords 5-20%)
5. Hot off the Press: Google is believed to be particularly interested in the wording structure of the page so here are two new words to add to your webmaster vocabulary; stemming and semantics. Use keyword stemming eg: Stem, stems, stemmed, stemmer, stemming, stemmist, stemification OR user, users and using. Use semantics with your keywords. eg spoon is a utensil and might be found with a fork and knife; use all related keywords in your text.
6. Highlight the keywords using bold fonts, strong, italic, etc eg SEOkeywordExample or SEOkeywordExample (4 times on a page is good)
7. Use images with ALT and TITLE attributes using your keywords and name image files using your keywords eg keyword.jpg
It would seem that Google only counts the ALT text if it is a linked image so we link the image to the same page on which it is displayed.
8. Outbound links also increase page credibility so have a minimum of 20 and include a link on the page back to itself. Use your keywords in links out to other relevant pages. Link to quality sites with a high PageRank but not to poor sites like link farms, FFA sites, low ranked pages or pages with reciprical links. All outbound links should be on-topic if possible with descriptive anchor texts. Ensure these links are stable and don't change frequently like a link exchange collection might change regularly. Add extra fresh links regularly if possible to an upper limit of 100 links.
9. Place the keywords at the very end of the page (eg in copyright info) as the very last text displayed on the page.
10. Ensure all HTML coding is correct including correct and live outbound links. Poor HTML may stop the spider seeing all your page's text!
Other other important on page factors include these:
- Use keywords in links to pages on the same site, including links to keyworded parts of the same page.
- Ensure pages have a theme and are consistent to this.
- 500 words of text per page seems to be most liked.
- Fresh pages are the best so make your page fresh to every scan with constantly fresh content (eg Bible RSS feed as seen at the right) while keeping old optimised content.
Remember these rules to avoid any negative impact:
1. Do not put the web address in the title of the page.
2. Never make exact copies of your page in other searchable locations.
3. Avoid repeated keywords on the page or in the code as these look like spamming.
4. Never use use text hidden by making it the same colour as the background.
5. Avoid having poor quality outbound OR inbound links eg reciprical links or link farms or even web rings.
6. Check your code as error filled code makes the search engine spider's job difficult or sometimes impossible.
7. Don't immediately redirect a visitor through refresh tags
8. Don't use vile language, ethnic slurs or "poison" words
9. Avoid too much cross linking between sites in same C block IP address(xxx.xxx.CCC.xxx)
10. Don't steal images or text blocks from other sites.
11. Don't do any keyword stuffing
12. Don't dilute keywords below optimum values.
12a. Don't mix keywords, create a new page.
13. Don't significantly change a page's keyword theme.
14. Don't change all the contenton the default page too frequently.
15. Don't change the anchor text of links.
16. Dynamic Page Problems - Overly long URLs, unrepeatable variables, unrepeatable session IDs
17. Don't use excessive amounts of Javascript and don't use it for redirects or hiding links.
18. Don't create Flash pages for text display - indexing spiders can't read Flash content
19. Don't create single pixel links, they are sneaky ones that look like spam.
20. Never create gateway or doorway pages or any other for of cloaking. You will be banned! Never present one webpage to the search engine spider, and another webpage to everybody else.
21. Poor server reliability (less than 99.9% uptime) will be penalised. This is the worst reason to get dropped - you just aren't there!
22. Ensure there is at least one good incoming link to REMAIN in the index.
Off-page Factors
*** Hot Tip: Build link credibility using "Social Bookmarks". Place links to your site using your keywords at Del.icio.us or Digg. There is a great article about Social Bookmarking on Wikipedia. Maintain quality links in My Yahoo and Google Bookmarks too.
- Inbound text links are extremely valuable. Eg search for "click here" in Google. The top page does not have this phrase in its text anywhere! Links can be from pages, forums, blogs, chats, etc. but the older and longer lasting the link the better it is. The fewer outgoing links on the referrer page there are the better; this makes yours more important.
- The links should come from popular high ranking pages and sites eg "expert" sites are a fantastic source.
- These links should use your keywords in the anchor text pointing to your site, your pages or page sections.
Inbound links are also preferably found in a paragraph of related text on a page which is itself optimised for your keywords! - Put the keywords in the domain name, file directory and the page file name.
- Ensure your site has an efficient tree-like structure. Two clicks to any page from the home page and ensure no pageis more than 4 clicks away. It is appropriate to have meaningful linking directly between the pages in your site, eg between lower level pages.
- Select a good domain class: Best: .gov or .edu; Good: .org; Better: .info; Suspect: .com and .net
- File size must not exceed 100K, lots of pages <40K is preferred.
- Hyphens in URL 1 or 2 good, 4 or more: not looking good, 10: definate spammer
- Have lots of new pages compared to the old ones that are indexed and that you keep. Never delete a page.
- Frequently update your site = frequent spidering
- The less characters in the whole URL the better. <100 good, <2,000 essential.
- Large sites are good.
- Old sites are good
- Have a good Google PR
- Get your site listed in DMOZ, Yahoo, LookSmart and inktomi directories.
- Complete a site map with keyword link texts to pages.
- Consistently theme your whole site.
- Lots of genuine site traffic is good.
- A high click through rate from serach results is laso good.
- Visitors spending a long time on your page equals a likely relevance hit compared to a surfer who goes back to the search engine quickly.
- Bookmarked linking of your page is also good to have with a recently added bookmark even better.
- How the surfer leaves your page is also important. Did they click a link they found on your page? Good! Or did they simnply press the back botton? Bad.
- Long domain registration time of 5 years is thought to be good but don't get hung up on this one compared to all the other factors which can more be optimised for free.
- Does the domain owner own any other important or highly ranked pages? This helps too.
- A previous high ranking will help with getting this back again latter after new page optimiseation efforts.
- Get listed and ranked quickly (in a few days) by having a link from a Google PR4 or greater page.
Have a link to your own page as this counts towards your page's ranking SEOkeywordExample

Having another heading further down the page using H4 tags is also a good idea.
